Cranberries and some other fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries, according to scientific studies, are a good source of ellagic acid, an antioxidant substance that has anti-cancer effects. Based on the results of clinical trials, this ingredient appears to prevent the alteration of DNA, i.e. our genetic material, “disarms” the action of cancer cells and prevents the growth of tumors. However, what is impressive about the action of cranberry is that it fights cancer cells before and after the onset of the disease. It also prevents metastases. This antioxidant, when isolated in the laboratory, is not absorbed by the blood as well as when it is contained in the foods we consume. So, there is good news for those who eat cranberries often.

Source of flavonoids, vitamins B and C

By eating these fruits, we take care of our health in an additional way: We enrich our diet with more flavonoids. These are the plant pigments that are responsible for the red and yellow color of fruits and vegetables and have antioxidant properties. Specifically, they prevent damage caused by free radicals, that is, harmful oxygen molecules that can cause cancer, heart disease and other serious problems. Cranberries also contain vitamins C, D, potassium and iron, while they are very low in calories, so we can easily include them in a diet menu.

Fights urinary tract infections

For centuries, cranberries have been considered a traditional medicine for urinary tract infections. However, their therapeutic value in recent years has acquired a scientific basis. A Harvard University Medical School study of elderly women who drank 1-2 glasses of cranberry juice daily for six months found that the number of bacteria in their bladders was reduced and, in addition, they were almost 60% less likely to develop urinary tract infections. region. Also, women who had a UTI and drank the juice were 75% more likely to get over it faster than those who didn’t drink. Two components are responsible for the action of cranberries on urinary tract infections, fructose and another, the identity of which has not yet been determined. These two work in a way that prevents bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder and urethra.

Almost all parts of the coconut can be used, water, milk, crumbs, sugar and oil. It has been classified as a ‘superfood’ due to its numerous health benefits. It is considered to have an antioxidant effect, contains vitamins, minerals and trace elements, detoxifies the body and has an antimicrobial and antibacterial effect. Its milk, oil and water are used in addition to cooking/beverages and in cosmetology.

More specifically, coconut water is extremely nutritious and refreshing with a slightly sweet taste. It is enriched with B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and manganese. Coconut water is one of the best sources of electrolytes. A natural isotonic drink that contains the same number of electrolytes as those found in our blood. Coconut water has the ability to hydrate the body at a deep cellular level making it an important drink for athletes and people who are in the sun for long hours. It is a great choice for everyone during the summer!

It has been proven to help both the blood Ph balance and the immune system. Supports kidney function and removes toxins. It has been proven to have anti-cancer properties and anti-aging effects due to its cytokine content. Also important is its help in reducing blood pressure and good circulation. And its bioactive enzymes contribute significantly to strengthening the digestive system and metabolism. It is also considered excellent for skin conditions and can also be applied topically to heal, soothe and hydrate the skin.

As for coconut oil, it contains a unique combination of fatty acids providing positive effects on our health. It contains an unusual amount of medium-chain fatty acids or medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which when eaten go directly to the liver and are metabolized to produce energy. Also, our body does not store MCTs in the fat depots (thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms) as is usually the case with other fatty acids. So it can be an ally in our effort to lose weight. A good solution is to replace butter with coconut oil.

Its benefits are multiple as it provides us with energy, helps in our efforts to lose weight, reduces the feeling of hunger, increases glucose tolerance and improves insulin sensitivity, kills pathogenic microbes (bacteria, viruses, yeasts, candida, staphylococcus) because it contains lauric acid. Recent research has found that coconut oil treatment protects neurons in the cerebral cortex. Also other research showed that it improved brain functions in Alzheimer’s patients.

It is also striking to note that in populations living in the South Pacific whose dietary caloric intake consists of 56% fat, of which 90% comes from coconut oil, which ranks them first in fat consumption in the world, the their blood lipid levels are moderate and they very rarely suffer from heart disease.

Coconut oil can also be used as a cosmetic since it is excellent for the face, hair and even teeth thanks to its antibacterial effect. It is also considered an excellent sunscreen since it blocks UV radiation and deeply moisturizes the body.

As for the milk that the coconut offers us, it is a perfect substitute for cow’s milk. Coconut milk, unlike cow’s milk, does not contain lactose, so it can be used as a substitute by people with lactose intolerance. It is thought to improve digestion and relieve constipation, it also helps regulate blood sugar, and reduce inflammation in the body. Popular with vegetarians and people fasting or looking for a healthier option, it is excellent in smoothies and milkshakes, in coffee, in cereals and in cooking/pastry.

Shelled pistachios, a super food with great nutritional value, good for the heart, cholesterol, eyes and diet. Pistachios are one of the best quality and tastiest nuts. They have been labeled as a SUPER FOOD and not without reason. Looking back at their nutritional value, we see that they are one of the few foods, which in a small amount give us an abundance of beneficial ingredients.

Pistachios are characterized as a super, concentrated food. It is one of the few foods which in a small amount give us a multitude of beneficial ingredients. More specifically, just a handful cover a significant percentage of the daily needs for energy, good monounsaturated fatty acids, fiber, vitamins (especially B complex), minerals and beneficial antioxidant components.

Even 25 grams of pistachios are rich in nutrients and contain 10 percent of the daily needs of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus and copper and fiber. They have a high content of plant sterols, substances that have been proven today to help reduce cholesterol. Antioxidants, which we know protect us from aging and diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Vitamin B6, which reduces levels of homocysteine, a substance associated with the appearance of atherosclerotic plaques and arteriosclerosis.

And all this with only 170 calories per serving of about 30 grams! In other words, we can cover a significant part of our daily needs in nutrients in a natural way, especially if we enjoy them uncooked and unsalted.

In addition to being delicious, pistachios can also reduce the risk of heart problems, as research done in Pennsylvania showed that consuming 40 grams of pistachios a day for 4 weeks and doubling the amount for an additional 4 weeks, LDL cholesterol it falls by 9% in the first period and 12% in the next.

Eating pistachios both times reduced levels of interleukin-1, a marker of inflammation that is a risk factor for heart disease, by 15%. This is because pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in unsaturated, while they contain no fatty acids. A recent research confirms that daily consumption of pistachios helps to reduce the pressure.

Studies have come to certify that pistachios contain the components lutein and zeaxanthin, which have a beneficial effect on our eyes. Specifically, they have the ability to absorb the radiation that the eye receives every day, thus protecting our eyes from aging.

Almonds are the most nutrient-rich type of nut.
One serving (about 20 almonds, that’s about 2 handfuls) is an excellent source of vitamin E and magnesium, a good source of protein and fiber, they provide potassium, phosphorus, iron, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and are low in saturated fat and no cholesterol . They are also a very good source of calcium: a cup of almonds gives us as much calcium as a small piece of feta!

Vitamin E:

It has an important antioxidant effect protecting our body from many degenerative diseases.

Magnesium and potassium:

They contribute to lowering blood pressure. Eating a small amount of unsalted nuts can have a positive effect on hypertension.

Protein:

It is a structural component of muscles, hair and nails.

Fibre:

They are important for regulating the absorption of lipids and glucose in the blood, as well as the good functioning of the gastrointestinal system.

Calcium and phosphorus:

They contribute to the creation of healthy and strong bones and to the prevention of osteoporosis. Almonds can be a source of calcium during periods of fasting when milk and dairy products are not consumed.

Σίδηρος:

It is necessary for the synthesis of hemoglobin (component of red blood cells). Almonds contain iron with low absorption. But the combination of almonds with foods containing vitamin C (eg a glass of natural orange juice) leads to an increase in absorption especially during periods of fasting when foods such as meat, liver (rich sources of iron) are not consumed.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids:

It is the good fats that help lower blood lipids if they replace saturated fats.

Sunflower seeds have great nutritional value. They are a nutritious snack because they are rich in trace elements such as iron, copper, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, zinc, in vitamins such as vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B3, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6, in good fats such as unsaturated fatty acids, while they also contain protein, i.e. 100g give 21g of protein.

They have anti-inflammatory properties.

Sunflower seeds have a very high content of vitamin E which has the ability to neutralize the free radicals that accumulate in our body.

They reduce cholesterol.

Sunflower seeds contain phytosterols which, according to numerous studies, tend to reduce the levels of “bad” cholesterol in our body.

They relax our nerves.

In particular, sunflower seeds are a very good source of magnesium. Magnesium helps control nerve and muscle tone and its deficiency is associated with overactivity of our nerves causing muscle spasms, migraines, muscle cramps, nervousness and fatigue.

They protect our heart.

The vitamin E present in sunflower seeds prevents the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.

They detoxify us.

The high content of sunflower seeds in antioxidants such as vitamin E, polyphenols and selenium helps to remove toxic substances that accumulate (oxidative stress) in our body every day.

They protect us from various forms of cancer.

Sunflower seeds are a good source of selenium which is a trace element that is absolutely necessary to maintain our health. In particular, various scientific studies have shown that selenium intake is associated with a reduced risk of cancer, as selenium participates in various mechanisms that protect against the mutation of our genetic material.

Food gives the pleasure of taste and satisfies the feeling of hunger. But mainly it offers the body all the substances (vitamins and other elements) that are necessary both for the development of the body and for its maintenance in a healthy and robust state. This provision is made according to the type and quantity of food consumed. But there are some foods that differ. The difference lies in the concentration of more than twice the amount of nutrients (compared to common foods) in much smaller amounts of food.

These foods are called superfoods and their consumption ensures the full coverage of an organism’s needs, without requiring huge and indigestible meals.

But let’s talk about some of these superfoods such as Cranberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, and Horsetail.

Cranberries

Cranberry, which is a fruit extremely rich in vitamin C, polyphenols and antioxidants. Known since the 1500s, from the time of the North American Indians, cranberry provides increased protection against infections and more – and this is because it neutralizes the harmful oxygen free radicals produced in our body.

Its anti-cancer effect protects, among other things, from breast cancer, while with its regenerative and nourishing properties it revitalizes the skin and gives it shine and beauty. Preventing stomach ulcers and dental plaque are just a few examples of the valuable role cranberry can play in maintaining our health. It also has proven beneficial properties in urinary, respiratory, cardiovascular and oral hygiene.

Raspberry

Their taste is special and strong, leaving a sweet and sour feeling while they have a very high nutritional value. They are an excellent source of phytochemicals such as anthocyanins, phenols, tannins and lignates, while their concentration in hellic acid and pelargonium is quite high.

The variety of phytochemicals contained in raspberries is remarkable since such a diversity is found in very few fruits. That is why they are considered to have a very strong antioxidant effect.

Ellagic acid, which, as mentioned above, is abundant in raspberries, is one of the substances that has a proven antioxidant effect. Specifically, it is said to inhibit the action of enzymes that promote inflammation and help, at least in studies done on mice, to reduce peptic ulcers and other inflammation of the digestive tract.

Blueberries

It is rich in vitamins A, C, E, B-carotene, trace elements, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and plant fibers and can contribute to: prolonging life, renewing the body, preventing allergies, myocardial infarction, arteriosclerosis and maintaining of health and youth.

In more detail, research proves that blueberries have antioxidant and anti-aging properties, they contribute to the prevention of cancer, to normal heart function, (they reduce the concentration of “bad” cholesterol), to normal brain function, (they protect against stroke), to protection of the urinary system (reduce bacteria that cause infections) and vision (improve night vision and prevent eye fatigue).

Hippophaes

In the shape of a grape pomace, a superfood with a slightly acidic taste. Unique combination of unsaturated fatty acids (ω3, ω6, ω7, ω9). A powerful antioxidant, it acts preventively against aging, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Strongly rich in vitamin C and E. It strengthens the immune system, regulates the metabolism and gives stimulation and energy while helping the rapid recovery and healing of wounds.

It is therefore worth adding superfoods to your diet both for their amazing taste and for the multiple benefits they bring to your health!
